Review of Becoming Jane (2007) by Ali S — 08 Aug 2009
If I were to be in charge of titling this movie, I would have called it "Snoozefest." The scenery is beautiful. The period portrayed was rich. But this film is missing any sort of passion, in my opinion.
I've always thought of Jane Austen as a really intriguing, feisty, quirky lady. That really doesn't come across in this film about her life, though. She was incredibly rebellious for her time. I didn't feel that her essence was captured at all. I think it's partly because of dull acting and partly because of a dull script.
The main plot of the story seemed to be about a love affair. But it doesn't feel the least bit romantic. It's all so matter-of-fact.
To sum it up, this film is everything that the real Jane Austen was not - boring, formulaic and uneventful.
