Review of Becoming Jane (2007) by Esthi Z — 17 Aug 2011
Anne Hathaway does it again. :) Have I ever mentioned that she is one of my favorite actresses? Well she is. And this movie is great. It's so fun to see a backstory or inspiration for her novels, especially Pride and Prejudice.
My suggestion? Watch or read Pride and Prejudice, then watch this. I'm so glad I did. The connections and similarities are a ton of fun to watch. This movie also shows how Austen herself was far beyond her time, and she was okay with that.
Anne Hathaway is fantastic as Jane, and James McAvoy also delivers a fantastic performance as Tom. On a side note, I could stare into his blue eyes any day haha. Anyway, Julie Walters and James Cromwell as Mr.
and Mrs. Austen, and the Maggie Smith (of course she deserves a the at the beginning of her name) is perfect as the curmudgeony aunt. It was also fun to see Joe Anderson (Max from Across the Universe) in a period piece.
Overall, a really cute movie and one that brings up the unfairness of the marriage rituals of the age better than her novels do. But then again, there is a reason she wrote all her characters to have happy endings.
Watch this movie and you will see why :).
