Review of Becky (2020) by Madlane — 13 Jun 2020
Another in what is now a seemingly endless stream of "girls rule, boys/men/white skinhead men drool" as #MeToo exacts its revenge for a century of man misbehavior, both in the cinema and outside of it.
The trouble is, this C-grade revenge flick is a pale imitation of much better films with the same idea, to wit "Kick-Ass" (or for that matter Kick-Ass 2 even), or "Hanna." If you need to see young teen girls kicking grown men's asses, those should be your go-to's.
Lulu Wilson, who seems to have some talent, is saddled with a one-note character who is just angry all the time in this film. Kevin James' stunt casting is okay physically, but his light voice removes alot of the menace.
Giant wrestler Robert Maillotte is an interesting physical presence, but everyone else in the film is bland as all get-out. The African American child actor never even moves off the couch or utters a word in the entire film.
He may as well not even be there. So while Hollywood may be fixing its girl problem, it has a ways to go it would seem toward fixing its race problem.
