Review of Bebe's Kids (1992) by Bryan G — 02 Feb 2006
I will admit that when I was younger, Bebe?s Kids was a movie that I really liked. When it would come on, I would sit glued to the television for the movies run and be entertained. So I figured that seeing the movie again would generate the same feeling. But much like Howard the Duck, some films work better when you are younger.
Based on the late comic Robin Harris? comedic sketches, Bebe?s Kids is about a trio of unruly little bastards whose mother is rarely around, and always leaving her kids with other people. Lashawn, Kahill and Pee-Wee use to have me laughing in my younger days. But seeing them now infuriates me beyond my own belief.
These kids have no boundaries, are rude to everyone around them and lack any common sense. But we the audience are suppose to identify with these three somehow. Seeing them beat on Leon, the son of the woman who Bebe is always leaving her kids with, caused me great anger. And is his mom that stupid not to see what is going on?
There is a scene toward the end that is supposed to redeem these three hellions. We see their current living situation and I guess are meant to understand why they are so rude. But why not try to make a movie where these kids realize their situation and strive to make their lives better? Is that so hard of a movie to make?
The movie is in some way charming, and still can generate a laugh here and there. Overall though, this film is nothing more than an insult on the audience. Hopefully anyone who has seen this, will see this or will continue to see this will realize just how terrible this movie is. .
