Review of Beauty and the Beast (2017) by Timm S — 03 Nov 2017
This movie was barely tolerable. They spend the entire movie being "diverse" and "inclusive", but maintain the same "a woman requires a man to be happy" core story. Pick one, you can't have it both ways. If you're going to blend the two, you need to be subtle and balanced about it...not ham-handed and lopsided.
For the kicker, they redid the opening narrative monologue about the Prince becoming the Beast. That's enormously disappointing, considering how amazing David Odgen Stiers rendition was. They could've edited it to exclude the specific references to the age of the Prince, and it still would've been fantastic.
Nobody reasonably expects a remake of any kind to be entirely faithful to the original, but there are so many little things that made the animated version great, and literally ALL of them are missing from this movie.
It wasn't an awful movie in and of itself, but it is a pretty terrible remake of a classic. And it's still not very good in and of itself.
