Review of Beauty and the Beast (2017) by Ooberscooter — 24 Mar 2017

Apologetically lavish and over the top. This is a movie that is meant to enchant and entertain. The meticulously designed rococo castle is stunning, and the cast of furniture is truly magical while remaining realistic.

This movie doesn't try to be something it's not, it's highs are very high and it does achieve some real emotional depth (the windmill, and the frantic sadness of the furniture at the end when they temporarily die).

I've been so sick of the dark remakes and this stays true to the tone of the original while delivering true doses of honest joy. Alan Menken is amazing of course and all the music is exquisitely arranged and produced.

The only downside for me was the heavy autotone which from time-to-time took me out the enchanted and magical world this movie so easily puts me in.
