Review of Beauty and the Beast (2017) by Nik M — 30 Jun 2017
Beauty and the Beast works well as a musical with elegant settings and costuming, a blissful soundtrack, and all the nostalgia to be had as a result of the adaptation. The original animated version is superior though with a stronger sense of relaying character personalities and majesty.
Gone is the outcast Belle who is instead replaced with someone who simply says they're an outcast; gone is Beast's ferocity, unlikeability, and short-tempered behaviour, replaced by someone who spends more energy being nicer and calmer on-screen; gone is the imagination and creativity behind the fantasy only to be replaced with half-handed origin subplots, nuances of overacting, and more of a stage-presence feel to its execution.
