Review of Beautiful Thing (1996) by Jerome K — 11 Nov 2011
You know, it's nice to actually watch a film about a gay romance that doesn't contain a sex scene. It allows the film to focus more on the feelings the two teen boys share for one another. While the actors did an excellent job and the script was very touching and real, I couldn't help feeling like there should have been more.
Coming to terms with one's own sexuality is a very hard thing and I wish the boys hadn't so easily gone through it. We just get to see a small part of their lives without knowing what ramifications this will take on the rest of it.
I guess that's part of the beauty of it. It's almost like a fairytale. In your head, you know some things don't last, but you want and hope for the best, and sometimes, that's enough. I think this is a good first queer movie too watch.
It's not too sexual and not too heartbreaking. It's just a beautiful thing to watch.
