Review of Beautiful Girls (1996) by Stuart R — 13 Dec 2007
This is one of those movies that makes you think of waking up with a hangover at your buddies house and then going out for breakfast and lamenting about women. There's a lot of talk and drama, but it doesn't add up to very much.
Some very 'real' and nice moments in this. Although, one wonders how much milage there is in the Male Bewilderment genre. I think Uma Thurman's character sums it up when she says "You boys take women far too seriously".
(sic). Good work from Timothy Hutton and Matt Dillon. The usual spastic perfomance from Michael Rappaport. The film uses that amusing movie convention where the male character cheats on a spectacular-looking girlfriend with another spectacular-looking character.
Yes, my life with Mira Sorvino is so unfulfilling, I have to go sleeping around with Lauren Holly. Little Natalie Portman is very cute in a well-written role. Rosie O'Donnell? Not so much. She takes great speeches and recites them like bad stand-up routines.
Like a joke looking for a punchline.
