Review of Beautiful Girls (1996) by Ryan R — 24 Jan 2009
A story about "a trip down nostaglia's rocky road" for those who grew up small town, moved away after grad and return for a reunion...only to realize that not very much has changed. The hometown remains as is, everyone is just a bit older, but you know you can depend on the friends of your youth to be predictable, comfortable, and accepting of flaws.
The scene with the guy telling the 'now miserable and older, worn out popular girl' that he remembers that she "was as mean as snake", while she attempts to feign no memory of her past behavior was fantastic! How many people have returned to their HS reunions only to find that some of those students who were the most spiteful and self-absorbed.
..are now posers trying to hold onto whatever they thought was so important in HS. In some ways, the new TV show October Road reminds me of this movie. Not a brilliant movie...but still a watchable flick.
There are facets in any of the stories within the movie that many can relate to on some level. The cast blended well.
