Review of Beautiful Girls (1996) by Patrick P — 31 Mar 2007
Beautiful Girls is an irresistible picture from the belated Ted Demme. The film is funny and well-balanced. It's very endearing, containing a touching story with a collection of tender moments throughout.
A good ensemble of actors led by Timothy Hutton have a solid working chemistry. Hutton does well with his observant character who is trying to sort things out. Matt Dillon is solid as the guy trying to get it right.
Natalie Portman shines as the cutesy, precocious neighbor, Marty. Some of the film's best scenes involve her interaction with Hutton's character. Michael Rapaport pops up in another swell supporting role.
Uma Thurman's Andera is terrific - the gal who seemingly has everything you could want. The rest of the cast also does well. Even Rosie O'Donnell is likable as the loudmouth Gina. Beautiful Girls promises a good time for all.
