Review of Beautiful Creatures (2013) by Tami N — 20 Aug 2013
I felt this movie was trying too hard to be like twilight and came across as terribly cheesy to me. The cinematography is good and I liked the idea of calling witches/warlocks "casters" - that's creative.
..It starts off in the narrative of a young guy raised in a southern rural town that he desperately wants to escape from. Everything from it's biblical superstitions, prejudices and lack of interesting people though I'm not sure why.
..he fits right in. His southern accent is so overdone, it makes him seem dim-witted and so do most of his actions in all honesty. I almost turned it off because of that awful accent. the male lead left much to be desired in a character.
..too simple minded & easily coerced when something new came along and the acting was atrocious. The female lead was actually decent for what she had to work with. I liked her - she was the best part about the movie.
There were a lot of cheesy special effects and a plot that I had a hard time getting on board with or even making sense out of at times. I understood it but it seemed so lacking - I didn't feel it was strong enough to carry someone through the cheesy parts.
There are a few funny parts...few. The idea of it all held a lot of promise...lots of good ideas for spells, special effects, a stronger plot, etc. The rushed "i'm in love before I've gotten to know you" is truly getting old and much too unbelievable.
Not that casters were but you may get my drift.
