Review of Beautiful Creatures (2013) by Stephen S — 17 Jan 2014
This can be incredibly stupid at times (see: unrealistic and idiotic male lead). The first half of the film almost feels like a caricature of the South, like someone from New England just wanted to set a book in a southern town without having been in the South.
Having been no farther south than Virginia, I can't speak for the South, but it can't be this stereotypical. Everyone is dumb, bible-thumping, simple-minded fool who sees satan everywhere. Yes, I'm sure that there's people like that down there, but when this many characters are like that, it not only makes the movie unintentionally funny, but it makes most of the characters walking cliches's.
Not sure if the book's that way, but the film sure as hell ended up this way. Anyway, that aside, the casting choices were great for this film, which the exception of the the male protagonist, who's honestly really weird.
The actress who plays Lena is fantastic though...can't wait to see her in other movies. And Jeremy Irons was a great choice here...he really adds a lot to the film.
