Review of Beautiful Creatures (2013) by Kevin R — 27 Jun 2013
God gives us what we can handle, even if we don't believe it ourselves.
Ethan is in a small southern town where nothing ever changes and no one ever gets out. One day something does change and a dark, mysterious family moves into a mansion. The little girl in the house, Lena, has strange super powers of sorts. Ethan and Lena will work together to carve a new future for each other.
"I'm agreeing with you! Ok, I'm just a dumb ass mortal who can't make his own thunder, but I know there's no way we're gonna figure this out unless you stop feeling so damn sorry for yourself! Go ahead! Start an earthquake, see where that gets you.".
Richard LeGravenese, director of Living Out Loud, Paris I love You, Freedom Writers, P.S. I Love You, and the upcoming The Last Five Years, delivers Beautiful Creatures. The storyline for this picture is fairly interesting. I actually liked the dark nature of this film and felt the story unfolded well. The acting is also pretty good and the cast includes Alden Ehrenreich, Alice Englert, Jeremy Irons, and Viola Davis.
"Everybody has to deal with shit in their lives Lena. You want to be a normal human, what do you think that is? We don't have powers to change anything anytime we want. Being human is feeling bad, it's feeling pissed off, it's feeling scared, it's you not being able to do anything about it until you don't feel that way anymore till you can just see your way out of it.".
I had no intentions of seeing this upon the release of the previews but I was talked into watching this by my best friend. I actually thought this movie was pretty good and reminded me of early Tim Burton films. I loved the unique characters and actually recommend giving this film a shot.
"The one that I love has to die.
Grade: B.
