This is an excellent portrayal of both books, father and son. And Timothy Chalamet is particularly excellent as Nic. Steve Carell also manifests excellently the intense physical pain of his emotional state that Nic's father goes through as he helplessly watches Nic self-destroy.
Maybe you'd have to have read both books to really appreciate the movie, and it might seem like just an incredibly sad story otherwise, but it has to be told and seen.
