They could've shaved a good 30 minutes off this sucker and still gotten the point across. Still, it's a wonder no one's told this story before. Like many war movies, it kills you to see people die after you've gotten to know them so well.
The fact that the face of the enemy remains inscrutable the whole time also adds to the seeming pointlessness of the boys' assignment.
