I have never been so moved across the emotional spectrum by a documentary before; Beats, Rhymes and Life is directed by Michael Rapaport as a love letter to A Tribe Called Quest, one of the most unique and inspired hip hop groups of all time.

The story is compelling, the music is off the charts and the men, whether it's the debonair but controlling Q-Tip, the understated hype man Phife Dawg, or the background player DJ of the group Ali Shaheed Muhammad, obviously love what they do (or in some cases, did).

Love, admiration, humor and heart ooze out of every orifice of Rapaport's directorial debut, which I believe ranks among the best of the year, and not just because ATCQ is a personal favorite of mine.

Above all else, this is a film about determination, compassion and unity, and anyone, forgetting just Tribe fans and even fans of hip hop, can relate to that.
