Review of Beatriz at Dinner (2017) by Linda B — 02 Oct 2017
My take on the film was that she was exhausted from her life as a healer. She lived by taking the pain from people and putting it into her own body. She was special in the fact that she could do this for animals too.
The imagery of the bodies of water throughout the film where there are dark areas is where she put the pain she was carrying from her work. The scene were she imagines killing the developer was just her living out what she wanted to happen.
As it turned out, she dropped the knife in from of him letting him know that she could have ended his life but chose not to. She was better than that. Not being able to connect over the phone with probably the only person that truly understood her, was the last straw for her.
The last 18 hours of her life was too much for her and when they all made a wish on the Chinese lanterns, her wish was to go home to the mangroves of her childhood. The final scene of the pacific ocean was her letting go of all the pain her had harbored over her lifetime and hoping her wish to return to happiest time of her life was fulfilled.
this movie was meaningful to me especially as an animal lover. So take review for what it's worth, chew it up, swallow what makes sense and spit out the rest.
