Review of Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012) by Paul J — 10 Feb 2013
A beautiful story about a daughter and father. Zeitlin manages to do three of the hardest things to do in cinema: shooting on water, filming animals and working with children. And this was his first film! There are some genuinely touching moments and the actors are sublime.
My main complaint is that nothing much happens. Granted, Katrina hits but we don't see much of that. Instead, we just focus on a Dad trying to show his daughter how to survive. But there's hardly any plot.
They just spend their time floating up and down the river. Perhaps, I was slightly bothered by the lack of a character arc. The little girl starts out strong and ends even stronger. That said, I love the fact that the dad wasn't a super nice guy.
That was refreshing. But in the end, the film was very forgettable.
