Review of Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012) by Paola A — 09 Mar 2013
OK, it's rare I see a film that leaves me speechless and unable to develop an opinion of it. This is one of those films. It is indescribable to me; I wouldn't know where to begin to articulate what is going on in this film.
I've read tons of reviews and nothing I have read comes close to really describing it properly. At times its laughable, and other times beautiful and moving, and other times really, really far out - weaving make-believe and reality back and forth as the main character's mind wanders and interacts with her surroundings.
I guess that's the point; it's just the story of a kid in and out of the kids eyes. I didn't love it, but I loved parts of it. I didn't dislike it, but some parts really were disconnected because of it taking place in a child's mind.
I guess that is a testament to the forward thinking and dedication of the film maker. I'm really glad I saw it, and I am going to make my children watch it to give them a sense of perspective, but I really never need to see it again.
