Review of Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012) by Jj M — 26 Oct 2013
This is part of the 'experience-film' phenomenon coming through from America now (you know, every critic says they can't describe it so they just say it was/is an experience), clearly influenced by what has been coming out of Asia for years but whatever.
The idea of 'experience film' is clealry been exploited by the director and therefore renders much of it hollow and inconsequential. Tricky camera work, dreamy sequences, unknown speakers contributing to dialogue, all that kind of stuff.
It's all an attempt at doing something different and that's ok I suppose. But there's nothing here that will make you fall in love with contemporary cinema, perhaps allow you to maintain hope, but not fall in love.
