Review of Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012) by Gavin S — 27 Dec 2013
An amazing performance by 5 year old Wallis, and an impressive performance by another first time actor, Dwight Henry, as her father. Another piece about a disappearing part of America, losing it's character and community to the urban sprawl of sameness. Also about family, independence, identity, personal responsibility and female empowerment. Usually anything that says "oh this child actor is impressive" means I should avoid it like the plague; but Wallis has more ability to act in her facial reactions alone than many seasoned actors do in their entire beings. The love for this project oozes out of everyone involved, that it was a labour of love, not at all a paycheque or shot at fame. It's also one of the few films shot from a child's perspective that actually explores the harsh realities of life up close and personal. I'd call this a triumph, and I look forward to the next work from director Benh Zeitlin as well as Wallis.
Definitely recommended, though it's hard to categorize, and it may be a little challenging for some people who prefer their films spoon fed to them.
Well done!
