Review of Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012) by Timothy J — 23 Dec 2013
If you're a vegan, you might want to stay away from this movie! We take for granted that civilization is tantamount to health and happiness, but along comes a movie like this and shows us a certain kind of nobility and wisdom from its bayou characters.
But more than that, it's a film about a daughter and her father who have a trust and understanding that is beyond judgment. Quvenzhané Wallis's performance is amazing, as is that of Dwight Henry.
I don't know if lives of those beyond the levees is as fruitful as it is depicted in this movie, but for the 90 minutes that I watched this movie, I didn't care. I was taken to a world that was beyond the need of frivolities like Whole Foods or Trader Joe's or being gluten-free.
It's a world where you're a beast, and to know that is to not only survive, but to be one with the planet.
