Review of Beasts of No Nation (2015) by Nikolai N — 15 Oct 2015
I was very excited to see this movie, but it did not come close to the hype it created. Allot of the scenes I felt were extremely dragged on to give something similar to The Thin Red Line's background dialogue, but with this film it only made it feel longer than its already two hour playtime.
In the Thin Red Line you would have dialogue during the heat of combat, but here you would be presented with empty scene after empty scene that really dragged the entire thing. Though there were many gripping moments and great visuals, I felt as if it didn't keep the entire picture from leaving drag marks on the floor.
Even with an emotional concept I feel as if it spent the entire feature speeding up on the runway and just as we are about to take off it slows down and taxis back to the concourse. As for character development I was very disappointed, as it seems Agu's only major change is when his family is killed.
After that it is almost as if he follows this path of gloom through the rest of the picture that he simply fails to avert from. If it wasn't for the background dialogue that allows him to express his thoughts I would have thought he was lobotomized somewhere and I just somehow missed it.
Overall I do not think this film is worth the 2 hour sit and is a let down when it comes to the gold Netflix has released previously.
