Review of Beasts of No Nation (2015) by Andrés G — 19 Oct 2015
This ultra-violent and graphic film being narrated by an innocent boy turned ruthless soldier is probably the most authentic look at the role of child soldiers in African civil wars who engage in many nightmarish atrocities.
Just like "12 Years a Slave", at moments, it was hard to watch but not forgettable. The images and scenes remind us all about the ugly truths that go on in the world that most of us may chose to ignore.
Idris Elba is just brilliant as the Commandant. Some would say that his character is borderline Hitler-esque because of his influential tactics and passion he shows for his soldiers and the cause that they are fighting for.
It would be shameful if he does not get an Oscar nod.
