Review of Beasts of No Nation (2015) by Craig T — 30 Dec 2015
This is a hard film, which is not to say it is absent of humor, beauty or lightness. But, it is so drenched in unforgiving brutality, it often left me wondering who its intended audience is. It's made with clarity and is often admirable in telling its singular, yet universal, story of war and warriors.
Its young star, Attah, does tremendous work, communicating an internal life rarely penetrable in performances of such few words. For all its virtues, I'm not as comfortable saying I liked it as I am saying I'd never watch it again.
