Review of Beast (2018) by Wayne K — 25 Nov 2018
Equal parts young romance and dark, foreboding thriller, Beast might not be the fairy-tale the advertising makes it out to be, but it's still a very rewarding experience. The success of the narrative and the emotions belongs largely to the 2 leads.
Both are flawed in their own ways, one more than the other, but the romance which blossoms between them always feels natural, and you do want to see things work out for them, despite their differences and the obstacles which come between them.
The films aesthetic is as at times bright and inviting, and at others dark and menacing. The contrast between sun-drenched cliffs and water to moonlit woods and fields mirrors the couple's highs and lows, and while there's a murder mystery which you would think would be the focal point of the narrative, its actually more of a subplot.
The main story is about loving against your better judgement, and doing what you feel is right, rather than what you think is right. Its got a few great twists I won't dare ruin, but suffice to say, if you watch the film yourself, you'll be as taken back by them as I was.
It's a stark representation of the darker aspects of our nature, and a love which attempts to survive in spite of them.
