Review of Beast (2018)

By Robert Kojder (605) for Flickering Myth (680) on 14 May 2018

By Nathan Osborne (34) for Film Inquiry (1,269) on 14 May 2018

Beast is a breed of its own, a gritty psychological-mystery with a brilliantly dark, pulsating and atmospheric heart…

Review of Beast (2018)

By Jude Dry (205) for indieWire (3,631) on 13 May 2018

Beast walks the line between taut psychological thriller and doomed genre romance, smartly remaining laser-focused on Moll and her fraying sanity…

Review of Beast (2018)

By Kaleem Aftab (340) for Cineuropa (34) on 13 May 2018

Pearce expertly mixes genres - psychological thriller, horror and romance - to keep the story on a knife-edge…

Review of Beast (2018)

By Robbie Collin (1,612) for The Telegraph (1,120) on 11 May 2018

Its control of tone can be a little uncertain, particularly during the ambitious epilogue – and I wish it had allowed itself a little more…

Review of Beast (2018)

By Sheila O'malley (474) for RogerEbert.com (5,563) on 10 May 2018

One of the strengths of the film, also written by Pearce, is how much it is willing to withhold, without descending into Gotcha! manipulation…

Review of Beast (2018)

By Michael Gingold (56) for Birth.Movies.Death. (774) on 10 May 2018

There is indeed beauty to be found on the island, but Pearce's sharply made point is that beastliness can lurk in unexpected places…

By Jeanne Kaplan (738) for Kaplan vs. Kaplan (1,174) on 09 May 2018

These two young actors are mesmerizing --- you literally cannot take your eyes from the screen…

Review of Beast (2018)

By Katie Walsh (1,279) for Tribune News Service (1,102) on 09 May 2018

With the assured script and deft direction from Pearce, along with Buckley's complex and nuanced performance, we never know what's actually…

Review of Beast (2018)

By David Kaplan (436) for Kaplan vs. Kaplan (1,174) on 09 May 2018

Beast is a frightening piece of work, despite its lack of violence…

Review of Beast (2018)

By Joe Morgenstern (2,395) for Wall Street Journal (3,071) on 09 May 2018

This film, a formidably accomplished debut feature by Michael Pearce, takes us down familiar paths into a darkness all its own…

Review of Beast (2018)

By Jeannette Catsoulis (1,537) for New York Times (5,786) on 09 May 2018

Bathed in a shadowy beauty and slippery psychological atmosphere, “Beast” soars on Ms. Buckley’s increasingly animalistic performance…

Review of Beast (2018)

By Chris Nashawaty (734) for Entertainment Weekly (6,953) on 09 May 2018

Pearce takes his time laying out his sleeping-with-the-enemy tale, but his stinginess with plot lends the film an vice-tightening air of mystery…

Review of Beast (2018)

By Justin Chang (1,535) for Los Angeles Times (12,977) on 09 May 2018

Pearce, in his feature directing debut, proves himself a solid craftsman, with a gift for giving even derivative story elements a nerve-jangling…

By Alan Scherstuhl (679) for Village Voice (8,525) on 08 May 2018

Revisiting Beast may prove more satisfying than just visiting once…

Review of Beast (2018)

By Mike D'angelo (730) for AV Club (2,778) on 08 May 2018

There’s such a thing as being too damn ambiguous…

Review of Beast (2018)

By Nick Schager (2,294) for Film Journal International (5,095) on 07 May 2018

Despite starting strong, this psychosexual thriller is at once ham-fisted, obvious and all-too-frequently preposterous…

Review of Beast (2018)

By Harvey S. Karten (2,210) for Shockya.com (657) on 06 May 2018

A well developed thriller with horror undertones…

Review of Beast (2018)

By Chuck Bowen (756) for Slant Magazine (8,298) on 06 May 2018

The narrative has a gambit that steers Beast into the terrain of a horror film, offsetting the sentimentality of the audience-flattering romance…

Review of Beast (2018)

By Anthony Lane (1,079) for New Yorker (1,403) on 03 May 2018

Beast is at its best when Buckley is at her most undaunted, showing us Moll at her most extreme — when she lies down by moonlight, for instance,…
