Review of Bean (1997) by Movie K — 31 Dec 2009
Most of the usual jokes are from his TV series, but it is still overall funny. Watch in cinema back then and watching it again brings back memories. Rowan Atkinson is the famous Mr. Bean. The management intend to sack him for his poor job performance as a guard in an art gallery but the head likes him.
They just sold the famous painting "Whistler's Mother" to an American gallery and Bean was chosen to go there and represent them. Peter MacNicol goes to receive him and let him stay at his house, much to the dismay of his family.
Bean already cause troubles in the plane, in the airport and in the house. The wife Pamela Reed tried to ask Peter to let him move out but just didn't have the chance and so they move out instead.
Peter then ask if he is a doctor and finally the truth got out. But Bean didn't meant to hide anyway. Finally the painting arrives. Bean was fiddling around and then he sneeze onto the painting. He used a handkerchief to wipe it but got smudge with blue ink.
He then use thinner lacquer to remove the ink smudge but the paint corrodes and he make it worse by rubbing it off. The whole head is gone. Peter saw that disastrous result and is hopeless. Then Bean got an idea of replacing the painting with a poster replica.
He set off with a good plan. First he put laxative into the guard's coffee and mess up all the keys. The guard was then kept busy the whole time trying to open the toilet. Bean have ample time to replace it with poster.
The opening ceremony Peter was surprise. And Bean have to give a speech and bumbling throughout its quite a smooth one. The cops arrive to inform Peter his daughter had an accident. At the hospital Bean was mistaken for a doctor and whisk into the operating room and he see the cop who got shot.
When he tried to eat a candy it drop into his open wound. He digged out the bullet and save him. Then Peter thought he is a doctor and ask him into the ward. Bean is trying to wake the daughter up and he accidentally shock himself, he fell onto her and woke her up.
They were all grateful to him and he request for 1 week stay. Finally he returns back with the real painting.
