Review of Bean (1997) by Julian T — 29 Dec 2011
I love Mr. Bean. His skit show on BBC has been one of my favorite comedy series dating back to my childhood. This movie however just doesn't really work. I don't want to make it sound absolutely horrible, but it certainly isn't very good.
Mr. Bean works in his skits because he's a goofy character who just finds himself in crazy situations. The minute you create an actual film about the character, try to make you really care about the character, and have to show development and introduce a real plot, its doomed.
Much the same way that movies based on SNL sketches fail, no matter how funny the sketch may be. Not to mention that 3/4 of the film is just redone bits from the TV series. It does have some funny bits, but they are intermingled with and overwhelmed by tedious acting, script and premise.
