Review of Beaches (1988) by Aaron R — 20 Mar 2008

NOw I am going to sound like a complete contradiction in terms on this as I cannot stand Garry Marshall at all and this is such a soapy melodrama from start to finish, but this was the first film I saw to make me cry and once again it comes down to the insatiable performance of Midler - Who is in career best mode here - along with the ever reliable Hersey to create a palpable friendship.

Of course tragedy strikes 3/4 the way trough and it's all tears from there to the end but the performances are dynamic enough that it lifts the pictures from it's pretentious hollywood roots to make it the seminal chick flick ever made.
