Review of Be Cool (2005) by David H — 02 Jan 2011
It wasn't exactly top of my 'to watch' list, but it was on and I was feeling lazy. Everything about it, script, direction, performances is pretty terrible. I hope for the more talented cast members (Keitel, DeVito, Vaughan) it was just a way to pay the bills or buy a new car, not that thats commendable, but I can't see any other reason for doing it.
The film is basically an excercise in vanity, with as many cameos from people usually found on MTV as possible. Even Vaughan, who is usually at the very least, borderline-amusing, tries far too hard to impress (or maybe that was just an attempt to spice up the lack of material), either way it didn't work. Gray was obviously far too excited by the prospect of reuniting Travolta and Thurman, that he forgot to give them anything interesting to do apart from a wayward attempt at reimagining their dancing scene from Pulp Fiction. Needless to say it falls flat. I don't think the dancing scene in PF would have been remembered with such adoration should the Black Eyed Peas have been hopping around in the background. And the less said about Cedric 'the Entertainer's'(...apparently) monologue the better.
Minor plus points go to The Rock, he occasionally scores some laughs with his gay bouncer act. Other then that I'm finding it hard to think of anything else redeemable from the film......
