Review of Baywatch (2017) by Jake C — 02 Sep 2017
All the elements for a summer blockbuster are here-enviable, jiggling-yet-rock-hard bodies abound-but the movie ultimately lets down its impeccable cast, leaving them to drown amongst a poorly plotted, unconvincing, and puerile screenplay.
The result is a movie that consistently shows deep contempt for not only its audience, but also its non-leads-either you're gorgeous, and of value to the movie, or you're the butt of the (butt-centric) jokes.
Even the casting of Jon Bass as the normie, dad-bod, goofball comic relief is treated with disdain: He is the nerd who adores the sexual magnetism of the other lifeguards, yet never is given value beyond his body either-he ends up with the babiest babe of baewatch not because he is funny, clever, brave, but largely because he's got a big Dwayne Johnson.
