Review of Battlestar Galactica (1978) by Brett A — 20 Aug 2007
Many microns ago, long before it was the best show on television, BSG was this. A cool idea mired in 70's cheese, big hair and made-for-network-T.V. mediocrity. The acting and dialog are painful to endure. Still is has its virtues.
First, after Star Wars, it was the only game in town for space opera adventure. Star Trek had yet to be revived and Dr. Who was too British. For me, this was an oasis in a television desert of bland romantic comedy, bland sit-coms and bland detective shows. This was bland SCI-FI but sci-fi nevertheless.
Also cylons are really fracking cool. The pong like red eye and robot voices rock. The ship models are excellent. John Colicos is a Disney villain brought to life as the queeny Baltar, always good for a laugh. The destruction of Caprica is fun to watch and I also like the sequence with the Ovions. Sure, when all is said and done it's kind of terrible, but it's few dubious charms earn it an extra star. The worst thing about it is that it helped pave the way for Buck Rogers...
