Review of Battleship Potemkin (1925) by Charles D — 11 Sep 2007
I'm not sure I'm versed enough in film theory to properly appreciate Eisenstein's montage, but I can appreciate many of the images, from shots of the maggot-infested meat at the beginning to the cannons rising in anticipation of conflict at the end, as strikingly powerful.
The Odessa Steps sequence is genuinely brilliant, and the film has a revolutionary gusto that, regardless or your own personal politics, sucks you in.
