Review of Battleship Potemkin (1925) by Lucia S — 28 Jan 2008
A historically and artistically important important piece of work. In spite of its blatant communist propaganda, Eisenstein captured some beautiful images--particualrly those dealing with the massacre on the staircase.
The editing, pacing and expressions of horror (particularly the mother with her little boy & the baby stroller) are quite haunting and effective even by today's standards. The film starts slowly and ends in a predictable (socialist-favoring) fashion.
However, this is another important film in the realm of history as well as for its beautifully shot expressionist scenes.
