Review of Battleship Potemkin (1925) by Jack W — 08 Aug 2009
BROTHERS UNITE AGAINST THE TYRANNICAL CAPITALIST OPPRESSOR! Even if you aren't a raging Commie, this is essential viewing. Eisenstein knows how to make propaganda better than anyone else, what with the clear, repetitious patterns and emotionally charged close-ups.
While there's little room for character development (everything is in the service of the political purpose), this movie works brilliantly as an entertaining, well-made action film as well as an angry manifesto.
