How did it take me so long to see this? I was astounded the entirety of this movie. You can really get a sense of how epic this movie is, because it manages to be a badass war story despite being a silent film.
The directing is in-your-face, with sharp angles, close-up shots, and tons of parallel editing and montages (originated by Eisenstein). There is great lighting, and Eisenstein plays with dynamics beautifully, as the film is an emotional roller coaster.
The sequence on the Odessa Steps is one of the most insane things I have ever seen. I'd also love to note that the music is incredibly excellent.
