Review of Battleship (2012) by Andrés S — 01 May 2013
In a wargames exercise, a naval fleet engages an armada not of this world, off the coast of Hawaii.
I didn't have high expectations for this film and indeed, the opening few minutes had me lower those expectations even further - but then we got into what this movie is about - a board game. With a mostly unknown cast and a very simple storyline, Battleship delivers what it intends to - two opposing sides attempting to hit and destroy each other.
There is a back story of an alien takeover that we (the human race) have basically invited and it's up to a small team of people to do their part to take out a communications array sending a message into outer space while the Navy takes on the invaders at sea.
Acting comes second (which you might expect from Rihanna and Liam Neeson plays a role he's familiar with) to some amazing special effects showing off the US Navy's hardware with a bit of love for a boat from time's past. I enjoyed it.
