Review of Battleship (2012) by Matthew R — 14 Dec 2015
Honestly I feel this movie gets too many bad reviews. Action wise the movie is well paced, if a bit predictable, and the villains of the film are actually very enjoyable (and appear to have rules of engagement rather than just being genocide loving aliens).
The acting is a bit dry and over all hurts the movie, but the movie is sorta like root beer... sure it tastes horrible at first, but the more you drink it the more you like it.... and if you drink enough of it you'll forget why you ever hated it.
That said, the truly amazing and spectacular part of this movie is the sheer lengths that the went to make it like the board game... from using the sonar mapping data to generate the grid, to the number of shots the enemy mortars (which are the red pegs from the board games might I add) needed to destroy particular vessels. If nothing else that's admirable (no pun intended) dedication to your work. The movie may on a whole sink, but you'll have a strange longing to come back to it.
Oh and the fact that the movie doesn't hide that our main character is an idiot all the way through to the end is a credit to both his acting and the writing of the film. Not all main characters need to be perfect and frankly some need to just be grossly flawed before they can be likable at all.
