Review of Battleship (2012) by Kevin R — 28 Apr 2013
Is he a fucking cyborg?
A NASA experiment causes a signal to arrive on an alien planet. The alien planet sends to Earth a series of spaceships in conquer our planet. A group of battleships in the Pacific Ocean get caught under an alien force field and may be Earth's only hope to bring down the aliens.
"What's your name?".
"I am hungry.".
"That's not your name.".
Peter Berg, director of The Rundown, Friday Night Lights, Hancock, The Kingdom, and Very Bad Things, delivers Battleship. The storyline for this movie was classic summer blockbuster with characters delivering witty lines and an offbeat love story. The acting was better than I anticipated and the cast includes Taylor Kitsch, Rihanna, Brooklyn Decker, Liam Neeson, and Gregory Gadson.
"I've never seen an alien. Have you ever seen an alien?".
Battleship is a move I recently DVR'd off cable. I actually enjoyed this picture more than I anticipated and it reminded me slightly of Deep Rising (a guilty pleasure). Overall, this film contains an entertaining script and characters worth following. I wouldn't say this does a great job of separating itself within the genre, but it is fun and worth a viewing.
"You're saying we sent out a signal and got an alien response?".
Grade: C+.
