Review of Battlefield Earth (2000) by Jon N — 05 Nov 2012
So I finally watched it... pffffffffffffffft. Crap, stupid, and well, John Travolta. Why have I given it such a high rating? Well, if nothing else it's funny, and the odd thing is despite it having plotholes you could drive the entire Sea Org through, it's sort of entertaining in a bizarre way I can't put my finger on. Yes it's poorly directed and shot and acted, yes John Travolta hams it up too much (and clearly looks like someone who's never been drunk acting like he thinks drunks act in that notorious scene- you know the one I'm talking about), but after a terrible start it at least sticks within its own poorly imagined logic so whilst it's a piece of crap, it at least remains consistently so.
You do wonder how it got off the ground in the first place, though. And at how much Travolta hated himself for having to do this. No, really, you think he had a choice? Read up on $cientology and get back to me, thanks.
