This hyper-violent criticism of competition between students takes said issue and turns it in to a forty-two way battle to the death mandated by law (in Japanese). Though there are too many characters to the point of knowing who's cannon fodder and who isn't, the main, main protagonists are well-developed.
"Battle Royale" is well worth checking out.
