Review of Battle Royale (2000) by Mloy X — 04 Sep 2012
Nanahara Shuya (Tatsuya Fujiwara): "I brought weapons.".
Nakagawa Noriko (Aki Maeda): "Weapons? Why?".
Nanahara Shuya (Tatsuya Fujiwara): "I'm weak....and useless, but I'll stay by your side.. I'll protect you...
That's why I brought weapons.".
Long before "The Hunger Games", there was "Battle Royale" and this film waspretty friggin' awesome!!!! It was fucked up in all the right ways!!! :D As the movie progresses, it just kept getting better and better. Understandably, it is a little cheeky but very unhinged; so much so, it becomes almost comical; but with a kernal of truth in midst of all the chaos that makes it all the more disturbing. The beauty with Asian films, especially Japanse and Korean live-action films, is that they have no qualms about going over and beyond boundaries American film-makers dare not tread. This is why Asian cinema rules!!!
