Review of Battle Royale (2000) by John S — 15 Jul 2012
Battle Royale is a curious oddity. Its premise is utterly ridiculous,it has a peculiar sense of tone and humor that's somewhere between dark and dry, and there are numerous weird idiosyncrasies that make the film just feel strange. However, it's emotional poignancy is completely astounding and the tragic horror has a sort of elegant beauty to it that feels almost Kubrickian.
The premise feels really silly and sounds like it would be more fitting in a film that was more focused as a satire rather than the genre mutant that it Battle Royale. Along with the odd "classic Hollywood" score, strange humor, and logical inconsistencies, the film feels rather uncomfortable at times. Despite this, you can't shake the feeling that you're witnessing something truly beautiful and disturbing at the same time. It doesn't have the charm of a full-on dark comedy, but it does have its poignant aftertaste.
The tragic emotion is almost a spectacle on its own. The film's ability to depress, inspire, and horrify the viewer is exceptional. The film almost feels like a throwback to Stanley Kubrick in that sense and it is rather entertaining.
