Review of Battle of the Sexes (2017) by Rollo T — 16 Jan 2018
There is somewhat of a spoiler in this review as there is a flaw in the depiction of how the match was played - but I guess if depicted accurately it would have diminished the significance of the actual match and the women's movement:
The movie was interesting in showing the struggles Billie Jean had to overcome and Bobby's back story too but the big flaw for me was how the actual match was played. It was not a serious match and was a media circus and a way for Riggs to make a few bucks off te media hype. When Riggs played Margaret court they played a regular match and Riggs beat her easily. When he played Billy Jean his side of the court was full of obstacles like multiple chairs he had to hurdle over. Billy Jean's side of the court had no obstructions at all. I was a young kid watching it on TV and I even understood the basic flaw that if the point of the match is to show equality of ability - why is the male handicapped! It was still a nice movie to show all that Billie Jean has done for the sport and that she deserves to have a stadium at the US Open named after her.:
