Review of Battle of the Bulge (1965) by Bill T — 10 Jul 2010
Very good and stirring epic war movie that showed the Germans had more pluck in them when we thought we had them beat, Henry Fonda and company go against Robert Shaw and Da Nazis with plenty of back and forth action.
Great fun here, somewhat misguided casting with Henry Fonda looking out of place, and Robert Ryan looking bemused at the whole thing (I was sure that was Sterling Hayden). The best acting comes from the amazing Robert Shaw, playing one hell of a fierce Nazi.
Quite a departure from the reputation of Quint. All of this is filmed in glorious Cinerama, which, while advancing the plot, pauses the film to remind us we're watching a Cinerama film by, yes, giving us "THIS IS CINERAMA!" shots (a good example is the train ride).
Great fun all around.
