Review of Battle: Los Angeles (2011) by David M — 10 Apr 2012
I remember in 2010/11 there was 2 alien invasion movies: "Skyline", and then this. While I did see 'Skyline' in the cinema (and a waste of money it was, too), I never got round to seeing this one unitl recently. Thankfully, this is the better of the two.
Like "Skyline", there are no what I would really call big names in this film: perhaps the most well known of the principal actors would be Aaron Eckhart (who I last saw as Harvey 'Two Face' Dent in "The Dark Knight") and Michelle Rodriguez (who seems to have made a career from playing this type of role). While "Skyline" concentrated on a group of civilians, "Battle: LA" takes the opposite approach and actually follows a platoon of marines fighting against the alien invasion. Making heavy use of shaky-cam footage, this comes across very much like a cinematic version of a First person shooter game: say, a "Halo" or "Resistance: Fall of Man", and also suffers from having card-board characters and being full of cliches. It could also do with having the first 20 minutes or so excised!
Still, on the plus side: it is better than "Skyline"!
