Review of Battle in Seattle (2007) by Leigh L — 31 Aug 2008
No other film this year has stood out to me out as much as this little indie. Battle in Seattle is a small budget film that feels like a big budget film at times, and the first time director has shown he's definitely a force to be reckoned with.
The film is not perfect, but it it is exceptional. What really drives this picture is it's phenomenal cast. Michelle Rodriguez puts in a performance reminiscent of her Girlfight days and shows the world why she is a future superstar. Her screen presence and charisma alone surpasses most major actors working today, and her performance is predictably strong yet laced with a relatable and fascinating vulnerability. Charlize Theron gives possibly the most gut-wrenchingly realistic performance of the year. While small, her role provides the most shocking moment of the film and definitely one of the most lasting images. Martin Henrson and Andre Benjamin were fantastic and the rest of the ensemble were great as well.
Overall the film has a very distinctive Oscar-worthy feel. It is definitely the must-see film of 2008.
