Review of Battle Beyond the Stars (1980) by Ben R — 16 Sep 2008
The Seven Samurai in space sounds like a better idea than it plays out. Mostly because Richard "John Boy" Thomas is such a boring lead, John Saxon is difficult to take seriously as the villain, and the effects unfortunately haven't aged well.
Not to mention, fans of the original might wonder why the great Torisho Mifune character was given to Sybil Danning's breasts. Still, the movie is a fun cheeseball diversion and is interesting to watch thanks to early career-making turns by James Cameron (as art director), John Sayles (as screenwriter), and James Horner (as composer).
Also worth mentioning is the fact that actor Robert Vaughn plays the identical role he played when Seven Samurai was translated to the American West as The Magnificent Seven. He and George Peppard (The A-Team's Hannibal) are always watchable.
